Review:
This set is one of the few boot releases that we suggest to avoid, for
many reasons. It is an exhaustive (yet, despite the title...
incomplete) documentation of the music that was available for download
from 1997 to 2004 on Bob Dylan's
official website bobdylan.com. The copyright laws have been stretched
to their limit, broken, and taped back together again with the advent
of the digital age, and then the ability to transfer that medium over
the internet. Few, if any, have a clear cut operating knowledge of the
theory of how the copyright laws are even supposed to work in the wild
west arena of the internet. If ever the copyright laws could be
finalized for the internet (and in a world wide arena, that's an
imposibility) Nobody has a feasible plan of how they could ever even be
policed... much less inforced. The entity that invents such a program
will find themselves rich indeed. However, as the music on these discs
were originally made available by Foggy at bobdylan.com (Who both the
Bob Dylan organization and Sony Music Corperation now recognize as an
official website), then, for all intents and purposes, they have been
officially released to the public. The reproduction of this material,
then, would be considered pirate material
by bobsboots.com, and we take a stand against pirate material. It all
starts to get very murky, however, when the material was originally
offered for free, as this tends to make it public domain. Add to that
the fact that it's no longer available officially, and it becomes an
out of print back catalog! What a nightmare! There are many more
reasons than this legal / moral issue that should discoruage a
purchase, however, the biggest one being the retail cost of such a
massive box compared to what is actually realized. The material is
haphazardly thrown together with no logical rhyme or reason, just as
it was presented on the official website. On the website, however, it
was ment for each individual piece to be enjoyed over a moment in time.
There was never thought put into how the entire body of work would
stand as a cohesive unit, because it was never intended to exist as
such. As the bulk of the material was copied directly from eight fan
compiled CD-rs, it ends with 2004 as
did the eight CDr set. However, there were more songs
added to the website in 2005 that don't appear on this
set. The title was taken directly from the fan CDr
project, so it is by name only... because the set is not complete. Why
there should be more discs added to a set that is already too big to
start with is anyones guess... and two discs worth of Maggie's Farm? I
like the song... but geeze! It's all just a bit too much. Too much
money, too much controversey and Far, Far too much time spent in trying
to chronicle, corelate and review! To make matters worse than what they
are to begin with, this
Label has never been known to be completely accurate with information
and has never gone the extra mile to ensure that the music is recorded
and presented in the highest of standards. There are a few of those
problems that turn up here. To make a very long story short, save the
money and grab these songs as freely traded CDrs.

Information:
Source / Venue:
Downloaded over time from tracks that were periodaclly made available
for free on the official Bob Dylan website
All notes that were taken from the Label pre-release information have
been compiled, corrected, and completely re-written by bobsboots.com.
The package notations seem to have been originally taken from Alan Fraser's Searching For A Gem.
The note notation numbers correspond with the original site designation
number through BDC62.
This number is also the package booklet number and the SFAG assigned number for easy
cross reference. After BDC62
however, the numbers only correspond to the package information and no
longer correspond to other lists due to the fact that the web site also
included video which was numbered identically. Rather than skip over
those numbers that were assigned to videos, the manufacturer made cross
reference difficult by changing the remaining songs so that they
correlate only with the package. The BDC prefix is
dropped on this website from number 63 forward to
differinciate that those numbers only correlate to the package
information. The original info, as recieved by bobsboots.com, can be
copied here
for anyone interested. The 'Available' dates correspond with the dates
that the songs were originally 'officially released' by being made
public and freely available by Foggy on the official Bob Dylan website.
