The Beeb source: BBC broadcast 1965 Tracks: First show Ballad Of Hollis Brown Mr Tambourine Man Gates Of Eden If You Gotta Go, Go Now Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll It Ain't Me Babe Second show Love Minus Zero/No Limit One Too Many Mornings Boots Of Spanish Leather It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) She Belongs To Me It's All Over Now, Baby Blue Review: The BBC television broadcast recordings are not true 'professional' soundboard recordings. Instead they are home made (recorded via a microphone going into a tape recorder placed in front of the television speaker during the broadcast). The resulting tapes were of only mediocre quality, marred by a high noise level and a thin sound. For this release, however, the label has done an absolutely astonishing job. On close inspection, you're most likely listening to an exemplary remastering of the best currently circulating tape. But at first, I thought I was hearing the long rumored professional soundboard recordings of these shows. Virtually all of the intrusive white noise is gone. The sound is loud, clear, and well defined; but it still sounds natural... not artificially cleaned up with clinical digital clarity. The great performance (now enhanced by this superb quality) sounds better than ever. This is a lovely release from a historical point of view, a wonderful snapshot of 1965, and (at least until such time that those master soundboard tapes turn up) a must-have disc. © 2003 CD Pinkerton bobsboots.com |
