The first CD release of the Isle of Wight can be reviewed in several ways. First, it does contain all songs performed at the show (although a couple are out of performance order). It comes in a nice package with a great concert shot on the cover, tracks listed with times, venue, etc. The insert card opens to reveal a black and white reproduction of an original concert poster. On the other hand, as there has never been an incredible sounding tape of the entire show to circulate, the Label does the next best thing in gathering the best quality recording of each song from all known sources. This creates an unprecedented, wild range of sound qualities from one song to the next. The best quality tracks are those that are simply pirated from the official release. The other tracks vary from great to poor. The tracks are all fade in/fade out. (sometimes to the detriment of the song beginnings). This is a technique used by some to conceal vinyl noises. Although this title was previously released on vinyl, the CD is recorded from tape sources. As the concert is under an hour, there was no need to edit it for time restraints. It was evidently simply an artistic decision of the tape compiler. The concert is historically important, but not an incredibly inspired performance. |
