The aesthetics on this one are as bad as ever. Unlike some compilations, however, at least it does contain all relevant venue information on the inside front cover. As for the material... on paper, this looks like a bizarre, thrown together compilation. To some extent, that is true - it's hard to see any logic behind putting the WolfTrap '93 tracks ahead of the early 1992 material. The 1993 tracks are taken from an ALD 'soundboard' recording, and are very good with strong, upfront vocals. Not the best ALD recording, but nice nonetheless. Three of the tracks are slightly incomplete: 'Don't Think Twice' & 'It's Alright' fades in, while 'Shelter Form The Storm' and 'You're A Big Girl Now' both fade out. It's when the Australia '92 tracks kick in that things start to take off. They are great recordings of great performances! A wonderful listen from an under appreciated touring leg which is under-represented on genuine bootlegs. Contrary to what you would expect, the interspersion of tracks from other venues does not distract from the enjoyment one bit, since the sound characteristics are consistent. Personally, I think they should have done away with the WolfTrap '93 material and just made this an early '92 compilation, but there you go. It is what it is... and what it is, is an understated gem. A surprisingly decent release that logic says shouldn't work nearly as well as it does! © 2003 M McGarr / CD Pinkerton Bobsboots.com |
